Victor Montes, Ph.D. Candidate in Photochemistry at Bowling Green State University arrived in the United States in 2002. He came to Bowling Green after having graduated summa cum laude and receiving honorific mention for his thesis project at The Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, Venezuela. In addition, he was winner of the bronze and silver medals in the 29th International Chemistry Olympiad. Victor was attracted to graduate school study in the U.S. because of the opportunity to both develop professionally and support himself financially. “America has a very well designed graduate school system; you are able to study and work at the same time,” says Victor. Victor is seeking a job as a materials scientist in the near future. His dream job is one that explores ways to more efficiently use natural resources. With expertise in photochemistry, this can apply to more efficient televisions, digital cameras as well as to solar power and renewable energy. Victor seeks an employer who will give him freedom to explore his areas of interest, who values diversity, teamwork and has a dedication to improving the lives of people on a global scale. He intends to promote innovation in the field of photochemistry by helping to close the gap between laboratory investigations and the creation of products that are used by everyday people. Victor will graduate from BGSU in May 2007. He is eligible for the EB-2 preference category and tentatively for the O-1, Exceptional Ability Visa. He is currently authorized to work in the United States.
